Taste of the DanforthAre you a “glass half empty” or “glass half full” thinker? We are officially at the half-way point of summer. Though it may be tempting to think of the summer as “half over,” our top August events will have you agreeing that there is still half of the summer left to enjoy!

1. Open Roof Festival: June 16 – September 1, 2011

In support of Toronto’s independent film community, the Open Roof Festival is “more than just a night at the movies.” With refreshments, a local band, and a feature indie film, this Festival is an outdoor summer party experience!

August’s films include Nowhere Boy, Rodman Flender’s Conan O’Brien Can’t Stop, Beginners and Submarine. Bands include The Wilderness of Manitoba, Locomotive 8, Lynn Miles, Yuka and The Junction.

The Open Roof Festival is held in the parking lot of Amsterdam Brewery at 21 Bathurst Street. You can purchase tickets onsite (cash only) – even if the website (www.openrooffestival.com) says that the event is sold out, a block of tickets will be reserved at the door. Doors open at 7:30pm; the band plays at 8pm and the film begins at 9pm.

2. SummerWorks Theatre Festival: August 4 – 14, 2011

The largest juried festival in Canada featuring mostly new Canadian plays, SummerWorks prides itself in bringing Toronto “the most provocative and powerful theatre in the country.”

The Festival takes place from August 4th to 14th; tickets are $10 per performance (including the SummerWorks Music Series) and can be purchased at the Arts Box Office (located at Theatre Passe Muraille, at 16 Ryerson Avenue) or by phone. With so many things to do in Toronto this month, why bother going to the cottage?!

Though your friends and colleagues (and mayor!) may be heading to the cottage, there’s plenty to do in Toronto  this month – we actually had a difficult time cutting it down to “a top ten!” With parades, festivals, summer theatre, and Toronto’s most famous summer food festival, why leave the City this July?

1. Dream in High Park: June 28 – September 4, 2011

A Toronto theatre tradition, this year’s Canadian Stage Dream in High Park features The Winter’s Tale, William Shakespeare’s fairytale of Bohemia and Sicilia. This tale has been described as both a psychological drama and a comedy, so regardless of your favourite Shakespearean genre, this play will be enjoyable for you and any fortunate companion(s) you bring along! After all, with gates opening at 6pm (the play starts at 8pm), this is the perfect opportunity for you to pack a picnic, relax on the hillside, and take in the beauty of High Park and a fantastic outdoor theatre performance with friends and family!

Admission is PWYC (with a suggested minimum donation of $20 for adults) and free for children 14 and under. To learn more about Dream in High Park, go to www.canadianstage.com/dream.

2. Toronto Pride Parade: July 3, 2011

Starting at 2pm on July 3rd, the Toronto Pride Parade will finish off our city’s Pride Week with a bang! It all gets underway at Church and Bloor, with the parade finishing at Church and Gerrard – find your spot on the route somewhere on Yonge between Bloor and Gerrard to be in the centre of all the action!

Pride Toronto encourages participation in the parade by all groups, including businesses, organizations, and community groups, suggesting that paraders tell their stories “through Art Direction, Costume Design, Choreography, (Sound/Music) Mix and Special Effects,” “go glitz & glam” and “be colourful and creative.” Needless to say, you can rest assured that this will be one vibrant and lively parade! Special mention will be awarded in several categories including “Best Art Direction,” Best Celebration of the Theme,” “Best Drag” and more!

New development in Toronto’s popular St. Lawrence Market neighbourhood!

Post House CondosNamed after Toronto’s First Post Office (which is just around the corner) Post House Condos is a fantastic new development in the popular and historic St. Lawrence Market neighbourhood. At eye level, Post House blends beautifully into its surroundings; located alongside a row of heritage buildings, the architecture features light-coloured materials for the street-level façade in an effort to reflect the Georgian architecture of the building’s namesake. Above, a glass tower soars to 21-storeys, giving the building a light and airy feel that is both contemporary and classic. A public walkway will lead residents through a revitalized courtyard which is designed to connect Post House with its neighbourhood.

Inside, the timeless theme continues. A European-inspired lounge with double-sided fireplace is surrounded by wood and marble feature walls, as well as wired metal furniture. Continue to your suite, where one of four contemporary interior colour schemes by Chapman Design Group will ensure that your home is as lovely on the inside as it is on the outside. European-style kitchens include modern quartz counters, custom-cabinetry, and stainless steel energy-efficient appliances. Spa-inspired bathrooms feature soaker tubs, glass-enclosed walk-in showers, and water-conserving fixtures. Suites range in size from 481 square feet to 1,155 square feet; floor plans include one bedroom, one bedroom + den, and two bedroom configurations. All suites offer oversized balconies or terraces, and will achieve the Toronto Green Development Standards at Tier 2. This special designation indicates that the developer has made an extra effort to create a sustainable building. Energy reduction features include the efficient appliances, an energy recovery ventilator for every suite, water conservation appliances, participation in a car-sharing program and bicycle racks.
